How To Properly Organize Your Storage Unit

Storage units are designed to provide you with extra living space, allowing you to put your unwanted items in your home in an exterior unit. However, in order to maximize the amount of space that you get out of your self-storage unit, you need to make sure that you know how to properly organize your storage unit. Thankfully, there are a couple of tips to keep in mind to help you get as much out of your storage unit as possible.

Use Small Boxes

It's a better idea to use several smaller boxes instead of a single large one. Firstly, this is because smaller boxes are easier to carry, which can help expedite your moving and storage process. Secondly, and perhaps even more importantly, is the fact that it's easier to move smaller boxes into place to ensure that you don't have gaps between the items that you are storing.

Though it seems like it shouldn't have to be said, be sure to always label your boxes when you put them into storage. This is to ensure that you know what to grab when you need to get things that you have put away, and to help keep everything organized when you unpack the unit. It may also be a good idea to make a map of your storage unit and make note of where everything is stored, just so you won't have to dig through your possessions to find what you're looking for at some point in the future.

Put Appliances at the Rear

You should always put larger, heavier items like appliances and other objects that cannot be deconstructed into smaller parts at the rear of your storage unit. This is because you will often be putting these items into storage for a longer period of time, and also because they can create a solid, unmoving base that you can stack smaller boxes and items upon without having to worry about things falling over.

Put Items Inside Appliances

Tangential to the above point, if you are putting any large empty items like refrigerators and stoves into storage, you should make sure to put smaller items, like pots and pans or even smaller cardboard boxes, within the appliances themselves. This helps make use of as much space as possible.

Be sure to put all the items that you will need to take out of and put back into storage at the front of the storage unit. Alternatively, depending on the amount of things that you need to have access to and the size of your storage unit, you can make a hallway down the middle of your storage unit and have items on either side so that you can easily grab a larger number of boxes and items as you need them in the future.
